Mystery fruit

This summer we noticed this mystery plant growing down by our garage. It kind of looked like a watermelon or pumpkin plant (which we did plant in our garden), so we decided to let it go and see what happened. It got several buds and eventually a little fruit began to grow. As it grew, we decided it must be a canteloupe, even though we didn't plant any canteloupe?! My only explanation is that a seed from some store-bought canteloupe (not the bad, make you sick kind) must have dropped from the bag we threw them into and then threw into the trash. I know, I know. Seeds from the garbage? Well, what's better...seeds from fresh fruit that were thrown in the garbage that then made it to the muddy soil or seeds from a dusty package from the store hand delivered into the muddy soil? Either way, there's dirt involved so I think you know my kids are still going to eat it.

Tonight, in Justin's "get the lawn mowed" venture, he decided it was time to pick the lone mystery fruit and mow over the plant, which was started to take over our side hill. This is our mystery creation:

And when we cut it open, it was confirmed as a canteloupe - although maybe a bit unripe.

Then there's Lucas, our fruit-aholic. He was so excited to cut it up and be the first person to get a slice. As it turns out, he ate most of them. Justin had a little nibble and deemed them definitely not ripe. He told Lucas to quit eating them because he was going to end up spending his evening on the toilet otherwise. I think he forgot who he was talking to. Nothing comes between this boy and his fruit. Needless to say the canteloupe is gone. I guess we'll have to see if Justin's prediction comes true ; /
