Bar Harbor, ME - 4/1/10

On Thursday, we headed to the other side of Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor. This side of the island is the "loud" side of the island, versus the quiet side where we stayed. It's much more of a tourist center, with stores lining the streets. Our focus of going to this side was to walk on the sand bar at low tide to the small island just off the coast of Bar Harbor.
As luck, or the lack of luck, would have it, Justin's pink camera bit the dust Thursday morning. We shouldn't have been surprised since it had been blasted by an ocean wave and then knocked on a rock while the boys climbed the mini-mountain behind our townhouse. Thus, we headed off to get a new camera before we could make our way to Bar Harbor. We were too late...
By the time we got there a big chunk of the sand bar was already gone. And even if we had made it out to the island, we would have never made it back. The kids were disappointed, but as you are all well aware, we are very good at making lemonade out of lemons.

The boys walked on what was still showing of the sandbar checking out the various shells, rocks, and seaweed that was there for the exploring.

Justin was quite amused by the giant seaweeds. The kids thought it was cool that it was bigger than their dad!

It wasn't the warmest of days, but the kids had a blast running "in" the ocean as they called it. If only they knew that in a few minutes they would be running "in" the ocean!

Lucas and I walked out on a little strip of gravel to this giant rock he wanted to climb.
After he was on it, the other brothers wanted on as well, of course.
So, another picture moment was created.

As I'm snapping away, getting various angles of the islands behind them, Justin yells, "take it and let's go!"
The small gravel path we had walked out on was no more!
The rock the kids were on is in the top, right part of the picture.
The boys laughed as they actually got to run through the water.

And within seconds, the sand bar to the island was gone as well.

Also in Bar Harbor is a coastal pathway. All the waterfront property owners gave permission for the town to create a two-mile gravel path directly along the coast. It was beautiful.
At the entrance to the pathway is this memorial. To who, I'm not sure. I was too lazy to walk up and read the plaque! : )

The kids had a great time walking along the rocky coastline that was not yet covered up by the tide. They especially liked the little pools that were made when the tide went out.
Justin loved this giant boulder that just seemed so precariously balanced here.
I, of course, stayed on the pathway while my adventurous boys, played below.
Hayden was the leader of the gang (or at least he thought he was!)

Tanner found the coolest little shells. And you can't see from these pictures very well, but they were all tinted green. From what? Who knows. But he thought they were great.

An adventure had by all. A wet adventure, but apparently that's the theme of this vacation.
