This was the first year JJ expressed real interest in going to JIM Club.
I think he's always been afraid he wouldn't be able to learn the material as well
as Tanner or the other boys and that's frustrating to him.
We decided he should go to a different session than Tanner so he wouldn't
have to think he had to measure up, but could instead be himself.
With a little loving, gentle encouragement from camp director, JJ flourished. Brian
took JJ's first poem and dictated it to a voice recorder thus allowing JJ to learn
his poem by listening to it sections of it over and over. This worked great!
Once he got over the first hurdle of learning a poem, his self esteem grew and he
began to believe in himself. It's so awesome to see JJ proud of himself and to add to that,
be proud of himself learning something and learning it well. Here are the two poems
he did for the Saturday night program:
