I've heard the phrase "cool by association" meaning you hang out with the 'cool' kids so that means you're cool too. However, I've never heard "cool by location" until tonight.
As we were crossing the street to Hayden's school for his end-of-year program, I was holding both he and Lucas' hands. As we were halfway across the street, Hayden said, "Can you let go when we get to the sidewalk?"
"Why? Don't you want your friends to see you holding your mom's hand?"
"No."
"I thought I was cool!"
He glanced up and me and then quickly away. "You ARE cool...at home. Here? Not so much."
Apparently how cool you are, or even if you're cool at all, now depends on where you are at that moment.
